A Dream of a New Land
Urgent call for funds to help resettle the community displaced by the Hidroituango dam.
Rios Vivos is the opposition movement to the hydroelectric project that gathers together fishermen, barequeros (artisanal miners), farmers, women and children who were displaced by the dam, some of which still live in temporary shelters in Ituango, and under continuous threat to their lives. The construction of the Hidroituango dam, the biggest hydroelectric project in the country, has created an emergency as it flooded the homes and workplaces of hundreds of families, while the recent collapse of the part of the dam affected thousands of people.
Rios Vivos movement has been threatened by multiple economic and political interest groups in Colombia who consider our work in defence of the environment, ancestral cultures and the territory unacceptable. Many of our leaders and members have been the target of collective and individual threats. Because of this on-going intimidation, members of the movement have nowhere safe to live, nor anywhere to meet safely.
We therefore began to look for support to buy new land for our community, in order to take refuge from these threats, and to create a new home for those who lost everything due to Hidroituango. This land would allow us to build new homes, to live safely and peacefully, and to continue meeting and fighting for our cause.
